Perfect Medicine for a Tender Heart

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

Taylor has lots of hobbies and passions. Coffee isn’t the only one, you might ask? Nope. Besides food and beverage consumption, Taylor loves to read and write. Her room is filled with planners, note pads, shopping lists, journals, books, magazines...Rarely, can we take her anywhere without a book bag in tow. Even if it’s a 5-minute ride to pick up dry cleaning. Doesn’t matter. She loves her precious bundles. Her favorite? Impossible. She loves it all really. Disney, movies, television, children’s poems, spiritual, Christian, early readers, decorating, cooking, architecture, mountain living, home styles, music, art…I’m tired just thinking about all her reading interests. Basically, she's all heart and soul with a desire to experience and decorate the world.

Miss Tay and I are currently reading a brand-new book. A good book, filled with personal stories and insight. The God Who Stays, by Matthew West, a Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, and author. Matthew is a long-time friend. Taylor calls him her BFF. Because Taylor loves him so deeply, she is experiencing a lot of emotions about this book. Pride in overflowing abundance. As a bit of back-story, Miss Tay was born with Down Syndrome and a life-threatening congenital heart defect. Taylor’s tender heart is equally her strength and weakness. Too little emotion makes it hard to communicate and too much can go from simple anxiety to actual medical episodes. No worries, she handles it all like a rock star! She just needs a little extra navigation and tender loving care. Given her incredible and sensitive heart, we agreed to only read digestible amounts of Matthew's book while out on excursions. It’s working for us, this wonderful blend of outside distraction and my close availability. Taylor is thoroughly enjoying the book. Seeing the sparkle in her eyes…priceless.

Right now, Taylor reads while sipping a Pumpkin Spice Latte at a charming coffee shop in anticipation of the first football game. Go KC Chiefs!

We are reading and savoring this new adventure together. And we are doing it two cups full at a time. Mutually open. Mutually surprising. Mutually beneficial.

Be present. Be aware. Be kind. And…discover the joy in it. Many happy adventures await!
